Our weekends are always blessed and full.
Besides having time to visit and get to know each other better and explore the beautiful hills of the V6 in CA or the mountains of WY on horseback, we:
- have an opportunity to practice cutting, team penning, and cattle sorting (CA)
- hike
- meditated on daily scriptures
- enjoyed group activities and games
- learned to line dance in CA & square dance in WY
- have a chance to win raffle prizes
- take time to reflect on God's Word and Will
- lift our voices up to God in music worship
- enjoy and marvel at God's majesty at our Sunday worship service on horseback or at our outdoor breakfast on our final day in

FALL 2022 V6
We celebrated our 10th anniversary with our largest gathering ever, 41 ladies!
2 of the ladies, who had never missed a retreat, were the recipients of a handmade quilt by Kim Austin. 4 other ladies who had only missed 1 retreat in 10 years, received a special "Warrior of God" award.
Like all the retreats, God's peace and protection was felt by everyone.
On Thursday night, we welcomed The Holy Spirit to join us. We asked Him to help us learn, more about the Character of God, and how we could learn to "Give God The Reins" to our lives.
Sue Carter, again, led us in amazing times of worship. She even changed the words to a couple of songs to fit our retreat.
Since we were focusing on opening the ears to our heart, she changed the words to the song "Open The Eye of My Heart Lord" to "Open The Ears Of My Heart Lord". It was perfect.
Then she went further with a slight alteration to John Denver's song "Take Me Home County Roads". We sang "Take me home country roads to the place I belong. To Parkfield, California, God's Country, take me home country roads".

Heather Sharp returned as this year's featured speaker. In her amazing, easy going and funny way, Heather caught us up on how her healing, from her TBI years ago, continued and how she and her family overcame the many obstacles that resulted from those injuries. Her stories helped and inspired those who have been or are currently going through, similar experiences.
Words cannot even begin to explain or describe the message & vision, God had given Christy to share with us. Her testimony touched us all and opened up so many deep conversations.

Sue Carter outdid herself on this year's collaborative art project, which reflected the celebration of the partnership between the V6 Ranch and HWBG 10 years ago.
As usual, the rides were spectacular and working cattle always a highlight for the attendees.
God displayed His glory and artistry with a incredible sunset
Saturday night, the ladies worked on "Spiritual Awareness" key chains. Similar to the "Color Codes of Awareness", developed by Jeff Cooper, to help the Marines stay aware of, & watch for attacks from their enemy; these key chains are to help the ladies remain alert to the attacks from our enemy....Satan.
SPRING 2022 WYOMING
When HWBG started 10 years ago, I never could have imagined doing a second retreat. But God had other plans. He put it on my heart and then brought the Triangle C to me.
A totally different venue, the Triangle C offered several small challenges and many opportunities for me to trust God and "let go".
Thus, the theme...

Early, and hard, attacks from the enemy told me something big was going to happen at this retreat. But God's grace and faithfulness carried us through.
We were tired when we arrived at the Ranch on Sunday afternoon, but as soon as the truck door opened, the energy from the ranch came over us all and excitement replaced the fatigue.

That night though, you could feel the brokenness and hurt in the room. With worship songs, we invited the Holy Spirit to join us, protect us and guide us throughout the next few days. We prayed for God's healing hand to cover us.
God Wanted me to let them all know they each were there by His personal invitation. That He had picked each of them to be there for a reason.
Sunday evening, the head wrangler, Dave, aka "July", approached me and said that instead of the regular horsemanship demo Monday after dinner, he would like to use his horse to give his testimony. He said he thought it would go perfect with our theme. He was RIGHT! His story hit home with many of the ladies in so many ways.
Tuesday morning, while I was having coffee with God, I found out why the enemy was fighting so hard to stop the retreat. I was approached by one of the attendees about the possibility of being baptized in the Wind River, that runs through the ranch. Long story short, Dave knew a perfect place for us to do this! When it was announced that we would be doing a baptism that afternoon, 2 other attendees and 1 of the ranch wranglers said they wanted to be baptized also! What an AMAZING privilege to be part of God's work.

The rides in the mountains of WY were spectacular. And on Tuesday night, we all headed to town to do some square dancing! If you've never done it, you have to give it a try.
I can't wait to see what God has in store for us in 2023!

"BE THE LIGHT" (Matt 5:14-16) was the theme for this year's retreat.
Our own incredibly talented Sue Carter designed the perfect logo for our event!

40 ladies arrived on Thursday afternoon and, although there were several "newbies", no one was a "stranger" Chatter, laughter and warmth filled the roundup room!
Upon arrival, the attendees were given a list for a "Scavenger Hunt". Throughout the weekend, the ladies were to locate, and photograph, as many of the 25 items listed they could find. The items ranged from "easy"...fluffy clouds & a spider web, to more challenging items, such as Quentin's Cross and a Portagee Gate!
QUENTIN'S CROSS
Friday night, our speaker, Paster Rachel Ratliff, from Abundant Life Church in Hollister, spoke on how God can and will use "Broken Pieces" to make beautiful things. And, like the kaleidoscopes the ladies assembled, even broken pieces, assembled together, with God's light shining through them, become beautiful works of art. On Sat. evening, Pastor Rachel shared with us how, as daughters of the King Most High, we are to shine and be a light for the world to see.
On Saturday night, all the ladies were asked to pick a light bulb from a wide array of Christmas bulbs, that were different in shape, color and texture. With overhead lights turned out, the ladies were then asked to take turns, and state who they would love to be a "light" for, while putting their light bulb into an empty socket on a light string. This demonstrated that, although we are all different, our light can penetrate the darkness in someone else's life, no matter how small.
"THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS, AND THE DARKNESS HAS NOT OVERCOME IT" John 1:5
The rides were incredible and gave us all time to spend with God and the women who love Him
We were blessed with special messages from several of our attendees, including Jan Pickett, Nancy Stetson, and Ginger Nowlin.
Jo Cameron shared with us how to use the "SOAPS" method of journaling.
Scripture-summarize, don't interpret
Observation-what does the passage teach about God
Application-what would it look like to live this passage out today?
Prayer-write a prayer to God telling Him what you've learned
Share-take a moment to ask God who would benefit from hearing what you discovered.
Sue Carter, not only blessed us with an incredible logo this year, but, as usual, she graced us by leading us in worship. The songs she chose were encouraging and inspiring.
This year's beautiful quilt, made and donated by Kim Austin, was won by Diane Gomes, who has been patiently waiting a long time to win one!

2020
During a time when much of the United States was locked down in fear and uncertainty, 31 ladies stepped out in faith, to spend time with God and connect with their Sisters in Christ. One of the ladies drove all the way from MO!
The theme for 2020 was “2020 Vision: (Stay) focused On God”.
God blessed us with beautiful (but chilly) weather. The rides were wonderful and of course, working the cattle always a fun time!
Because of the uncertainty of travel, and financial challenges faced by many, partial scholarships were given out instead of 1 full scholarship.
Nancy Stetson & her daughter, Ginger Nowlin, graced us with stories about Nancy’s husband, Tinsley, who graduated to his heavenly home earlier in the year.
Kim Austin, again, outdid herself with the quilt she made for the Scholarship fund. Seems everyone wants an Austin Original!

Jan Pickett graciously agreed to be our “featured” speaker this year, since travel was so uncertain with COVID 19 still in the picture. Jan’s opening comment hit home with me (and I am sure, many others). She said:
”Every time slot, every day, YOUR name is on God’s calendar. YOU need to figure out when He fits into your calendar”.
”Every time slot, every day, YOUR name is on God’s calendar. YOU need to figure out when He fits into your calendar”.
Jan led us into a deeper study of Psalm 23 (The Lord is My Shepherd). She gave us 3 phrases to help us make our prayers more personal with God: “My Shepherd I..
1. thank You for….”
2. praise You for…”
3. ask You for…”
1. thank You for….”
2. praise You for…”
3. ask You for…”
Fran Sands taught us how to sign, now only the Pledge of Allegiance, but also, the song God Bless America! It was amazing and brought tears to the eyes of many!
Worship, was led by the incredible talented Sue Carter, and this year, Sue was also joined by Nancy & Ginger!
Erlinda again got us moving, with some fun line dancing. It also helped us warm up on those cool evenings.
As hard as it is to imagine, this year’s art project turned out even better than last year’s! Sue’s God given artistic talents and God’s divine intervention (long story), made for an amazing piece of art work.

The weekend wrapped up with a ride to the top of the hill, where we held church on horseback and worshipped our amazing God.
Again, as with the past retreats, many of the ladies didn’t want to go home. They didn’t want to leave the peace they found that weekend at the V6. I had to agree. Facing the chaos and uncertainty the world was in was daunting.
But, we were reminded that we had all been called to the Great Commission. Jesus has called each & everyone of us to be full time missionaries; making disciples as we go throughout our lives and our work. With God’s grace, and discernment from the Holy Spirit, we need to step out and speak up while standing on, and sharing, the Word of God.

2019
This year's AMAZING retreat started even before we got to the V6. Our incredible worship leader, Sue Carter, sent all the attendees a copy of a beautiful CD, recorded by the Campo Beach Church worship team. Not only would this get the attendees familiar with some of the songs we would be singing, it would also help them start "defusing" and connecting with their Lord and Savior on their drive to the retreat.
In their "Welcome" bags, every lady received a beautiful, and very useful, booklet, put together by our speaker, Jan Picket (more on Jan later). This booklet was used throughout the retreat during Jan's talks, for our "Morning Manna" sessions and for our own personal, quiet moments. In addition to beautiful artwork, the booklet was filled with so much to "chew" on and ponder. Things like..."God wants you to invite Him into your EVERYTHING"; God is ABLE-Abounding, Boundless, Limitless, Everlasting"; "It is the Presence of God in the life of His daughters that makes HIs daughters, distinct" and "He is present in His Word...Come, meet Him there". Fran Sands shared with us how she has experienced God in her life.
One of the many examples that Jan spoke about that really stuck in my mind was how our horses worry, pace and paw at the trailer, even though we have provided all their needs. Isn't that just like us with God!? He has promised to always provide what we need.
In addition to great trail rides and playing with the cattle, here are some of the other things we did throughout the weekend.

Since our theme was "Raise a Hallelujah", Jan gave us the history of the word Hallelujah. We were also treated to a lesson on how to sign the chorus of "Raise A Hallelujah", by Fran Sands. What a beautiful sight, watching all the ladies raising their hands and voices in praise of our Lord.
Our scholarship winner this year, Chandra Lake, who is an Air Force Veteran, and now works for the VA, shared with us how strong the American Spirit really is and how much it means to our soldiers and their families to know they are remembered, cared about and appreciated.
On Friday, for the second year, ladies brought small gifts to pack into shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, sponsored by Samaritan's Purse. We made several children happy and had a great time doing it!
Saturday, our incredibly talented worship leader, with the help of her "Deva" friends, lead us on in incredible "art activity". We each "randomly" picked a square piece of heavy construction paper with an outline of a "design" on the front and a scripture verse on the back. We were told to paint our square any way we wanted to. Only thing not allowed was to say things like "I can't paint.", "I'm not good at things like this", etc. After we were done the squares were collected. That night Sue revealed the finished mosaic. It was UNBELIEVABLE!! We were all speechless at its beauty and the way every piece blended and worked together. Just like God's plan for us. We can't see the finished product , but He does...and it is beautiful.

Kim's quilt this year was spectacular! Pam, another "quilter" was ecstatic when she was announced as the raffle winner.
The moonlight ride was a special moment. We were able to really drink in what an awesome God we serve.
We followed up our ride with worship music, and then, line dancing with Erlinda!

Our cowboy church on horseback Sunday, was held at the beautiful, new memorial structure at the V6. Jan spoke on Romans 8:31-39 and Psalm 16:11 and ended with "Therefore raise a Hallelujah", as all of us, God's daughters shouted "AMEN"!
ABOUT JAN
Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Jan now lives in San Juan Capistrano, with her husband of 45 years, Marty. Jan and Marty have 2 children and 5 grandchildren.
During her “professional season”, Jan was the West Coast Manager of Manpower Planning and Employee Placement (now called “HR”) for Disneyland.
From her earliest remembrance Jan always believed in God. As Jan puts it “We were Easter and Christmas church attenders growing up. God put guard rails in my life from my earliest remembrances. Certainly I did not and would not have recognized them at the time. Often times our clearest view of Jesus is seen in the rear view mirror. My preschool childhood friends were from church attending families, so I wanted to go too. My elementary school friends also attended church, so I wanted to go too. My best friend’s mom taught Sunday school and my friend sang in the choir, so I wanted to go too. My best friend in Junior High, went to church and youth group, so I wanted to go too. My high school boyfriend’s church had a really cool summer program for teens, so I wanted to go too. In college I became friends with a girl from Evansville Indiana. She was, and still is, gorgeous, fun, popular, and talked about Jesus. . . a lot. I was drawn to her. I wanted what she had and recognized whatever ‘it’ was was missing in my life. So, I copied her. She wore a cross, so I bought one and wore it all the time. Yet somehow, she was still ‘different’ and something was missing in my life. She read daily from her book called, ‘The Way’. So I bought one and started reading at the beginning That did not last long. All those names and lists???!
Fast forward. I had attended church most of my life. My dad would take me because I asked to go with my friends. When I could drive, I took myself. So,on outward appearances everyone assumed that I was a Christian and that I knew Jesus. The guardrails of friends and their families kept me from being in places where the choices and decisions being made by my friends were mine too. I knew the Bible Stories, I knew the hymns, but I did not know the Author, or His Son, or the Holy Spirit. I signed up for a Bible Study during my Maternity leave of absence because a new friend of mine went to this Bible Study and she spoke about it all the time. On top of that, she had daily homework and read her Bible everyday! The Bible Study was Community Bible Study and the class I joined was studying the Book of Acts. Paul’s Damascus Road experience in Acts 9 became mine. As the Teaching Director was teaching over the verses we had studied at home all week in our lesson she paused and asked, “Are any of you like Paul, you call the Lord your Lord, but you have never let Him rule in your heart.” For years I had been in different churches and in the midst of Christian friends. I looked like them, acted like them in my outward choices, but had never heard about knowing Jesus personally and giving Him my whole heart, mind, and body. It was life changing for me in that very moment. Sitting in the midst of over 200 hundred women, I silently prayed asking Jesus to take my heart, take all of me. I confessed my sin and need of His saving Grace. The tears flowed down my checks. No one noticed, but in that moment, EVERYTHING changed. I had and still have an unquenchable hunger and thirst for the Word of God.Everything I had ever heard all suddenly made sense. It was so simple and so clear. I have been ‘all in’ ever since.
So What Changed?
Little by little the Lord peeled me like an onion. Layer upon layer removed. Gently, firmly, a process of transformation. Less and less of me and more and more of Him. That will continue until I cross the finish line of the race set before me and hear the words I long to hear, “Welcome home daughter, well done my good and faithful servant.” The Lord took all of the skills, experiences, and opportunities He had provided in the doors He had opened for me at the ‘Magic Kingdom’ and set me on a course to serve Him for His Kingdom. I prayed daily for one full year, the simple old time praise song, “Make Me A Servant” and He has been refining me for His purposes and His Kingdom everyday since that very first.
I left my position with Disneyland shortly after I returned to work from my maternity leave. I knew it was time for me to go. I highly valued my work and my colleagues. There was nothing ‘wrong’. Simply and suddenly it was time for a new season. The Lord was bringing a new rhythm, and new balance, a new perspective rapidly in my life, my marriage, my parenting, my relationships, my mind, my heart, my spirit as I discovered my true identity in Christ alone.
If there is only one, I will be there . . . . Hineni!
Decades ago, in a time of prayer, in the book of Isaiah, the Lord impressed upon me His Call on my life. In Isaiah 6:8 Isaiah hears the voice of the Lord asking amongst the triune Godhead, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? and Isaiah responds, “Here am I. Send me!” In the original language that reply is summed up in one word, ‘Hineni’. This is a very powerful, bold word that means, “Here I am” or ‘Behold me.” It is the same word that Abraham spoke when God called him. It is the same word the Moses spoke when God called him. It was Samuel’s response when God called him. God even says it of Himself when announcing what He is about to do or a covenant He is about to make. Hineni is my response to Him. I will show up ready and fully committed, even if it is for only one . . . because He is my One and only.
Since my very first Hineni:
The Lord Called me to serve Him as the Director of Children’s Ministry at Irvine Presbyterian Church in Irvine, CA under then Pastor Ben Patterson. I was on staff for 5 years, until we moved to North Andover, MA. The Lord Called me to serve in Community Bible Study beginning in 1983. I served in various roles in both Southern California, Massachusetts, and Nationally. Roles include Core Group Leader, Teaching Director, National Women’s Day Servant Team, Training Teaching Directors, Keynote Speaker on the National Leadership Development Team. Director of Women’s Ministry in various churches over the last 35 years. Keynote Speaker at Various Women’s Conferences and Retreats.
So where do horses fit in with all of this?
I have loved horse my entire life. My dad grew up on a small farm and his father was the Large Animal Veterinarian for the Stockyards in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and his farming community in New Ross Indiana. He loved horses and at one time had the privilege of caring for Man o’ War. I remember he had two small brass horses on his book shelves and I played with them every time we were at their home. I loved the smell of his veterinary office. He had a small herd of cattle, and a few hogs, chickens, the best flower and vegetable garden, black raspberries . . . . but no horses. The neighboring farms had horses and I stood at the fence gazing longingly. My dad grew up with a gated horse that he loved and always promised that I could have a horse if we ever lived where we could keep one. I do believe he was sincere, but that opportunity never presented itself. I volunteered to work at a stable in junior high just so I could be near the horses. I did everything for them on the ground, but never had the opportunity
to ride. I still loved it, and at the time, had no idea that I was being taken advantage of! My cousin had horses and when we visited I would get to ride with her. I begged to ride horses on every vacation to a state park that had a stables. All the way through high school. Fast Forward When our son Ryan went to college I signed up to take riding lessons with a group of young girls in SJC. There was no going back for me. The rest is history. When my dad died, there was a small inheritance split between my brother and I. So, my daddy did in fact buy me my first horse. I took lessons, sold that horse and approached Becky Holman about the possibility of coming into her program to learn reining. I still train with Becky and love the reined cow horse. I have three AQHA geldings, a 4 year old, 10 year old and 15 year old. “Little girls fantasy, old ladies opportunity. Thankful!

Thankful!

WOW!! I really am speechless….I don’t know where to start to describe, to summarize, or to explain this year’s retreat. Even the heavy smoke from the deadly & devastating California wildfires couldn’t override God’s plans for all who attended.
I should have known this year would be another amazing weekend, when the retreat filled in less than 3 weeks, with a pretty long waiting list! As expected, “life happened” and some of the ladies had to withdraw, so several of the ladies on the waiting list were given the opportunity to register.
As a reflection of how Jesus is our Rock and inspiration, Thursday evening before dinner, attendees were given the opportunity to paint “inspirational” rocks. Although this was originally meant to be a one night activity, several of the ladies continued painting rocks throughout the weekend. Artistic talent and creativity were definitely in large supply!
After dinner, this year’s Cooper James Costa scholarship winners, Amy Obringer & Erin Williams, were introduced. Erin was gracious (and brave) enough to share her testimony with us. Through her openness & trust in telling her story, God was able to let all the ladies know they were in a safe and judgment-free environment. His love and protection was almost palatable. Although Erin shared so much with us, one thing she said resonated with many of us. She said after she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior, “the sky was bluer” and “things were sharper/clearer”. How true, how true!
Friday morning, as we listened to the song “A Soldier’s Halleluiah”, we lifted up in prayer, and gave thanks to, those who have given so much for our freedom…our Veterans. During our scripture study, our speaker, KayCee Graham, reminded us that we are God’s best creation and we are the only one of God’s creation that worries about what we will become! She also reminded us that God wants us to “steward ourselves” KayCee then challenged us to “change the way we think, when we step into nature”. Our “assignment” on our ride was to look for God in His creation and open ourselves up to hear Him speaking to us. There were some “heavy revie’s” shared Friday evening!
Friday afternoon, everyone participated in our first Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child event. With Denise Shipley and Pamela Michaelis in the lead, and TONS of items donated by the attendees, we filled 55 shoeboxes. These shoeboxes will be sent to children all over the world. Friday evening, Vicki Shook, shared her incredible story of overcoming severe head trauma and how her journey led her to her ministry..making tail bags. The proceeds from these tail bags are then given to High Hopes Head Injury Program.

Saturday, KayCee told us how (and why) a female eagle chooses her mate by putting him through a series of test. If you haven’t heard this before, Google it. It is incredibly insightful!
After a wonderful day of trail riding and playing with cows and another great dinner, we held our 5th annual quilt raffle. The beautiful quilt, made and donated by Kim Austin, was won by Mary Kay Newell, from Idaho. The monies from this raffle support our scholarship fund.

Saturday evening, KayCee shared with us her incredible story. A story of strength, determination, and the importance of truly knowing our “Abba, Father”. KayCee also talked about how “Fear is a liar” and FEAR means “False Evidence Appearing Real”. While our worship team of Sue Carter and Erin Williams sang the song, “Fear Is A Liar”, we all gathered around the campfire and “cast our fears in the fire”. What a powerful time that was. KayCee closed the evening, by reading the meaning of all our names. It was so inspiring to realize that God, our Father, Daddy, named us while we were still in our mother’s womb.
Our weekend wrapped up with beautiful music worship & church on horseback, led by KayCee. As I was listen to KayCee and reflecting on the whole weekend, I looked down, and between my feet was this rock. Can you see it?!! He didn’t even need paint and markers to make His rock!
A little about Kaycee....
My story is one of redemption. Based on statistics, I should currently be an addict, have deep hatred of men, and not have a stable home. According to the world, I was to perpetuate what I was raised in; Abuse, addiction, abandonment, instability, hatred, the list goes on. But God. It is only He who could perform the work that has been done in me. The name of Jesus has empowered me to beat the odds and be proof of "He whom the Son sets free, is free indeed." I've had to walk through many levels of forgiveness. One of the key things that has helped me with forgiveness is understanding who God actually is, and not just what I was taught about Him. He loves to reveal Himself to us. I believe that seeking out His true nature is a key to His freedom, and really having the personal relationship we are called to have with Him. I desire to spend my life showing people who He is, and empowering them to find out for themselves. The Lord loves to speak through all that He created. My heart for this retreat is that we will be overwhelmed by His attributes clearly revealed in nature. May we be enamored by His intentionality in creation, and come to know Him as "Abba, Father!"

2017
As I sit here, trying to figure out how to summarize 2017 HWBG Retreat, I am both at a loss for words, and at the same time, so filled with memories that I want to share. The problem is there isn't enough room on this website to handle them!
The first rig pulled into the horse camp around 2:30 on Thursday afternoon & by the time we gathered for appetizers, welcomes & introductions around 5:00, 35 excited, talkative ladies filled the meeting hall.
We started the weekend off with the 1st Annual HWBG triathlon, which consisted of a road apple toss, roping a dummy steer & shooting laser targets, all while mounted on a stick horse!
Our theme was "Be Still"
Our guest speaker was Whitney Cartrite-Huckaby. Whitney is a wife, mother, author, & horse & cattlewoman. She is a country girl who enjoys seeing the Word of God come to life through spending time with her horses. Whitney shared several stories about how God has taught her many lessons, through her horses and cattle, on the importance of "being still" and "sitting the stop". Whitney says, "To Me, horses resemble the Word of God in that they are active and living. New discoveries are waiting to be made every day. There is always more to learn because neither is robotic. Each offers a fresh inspiration that evokes us to change and grow. Both are a pillar of strength but have a softness and tenderness that demands our trust."
Each day started with an inspirational video, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. After an amazing breakfast, prepared by the beautiful Barb Varian and her staff, we were blessed with rich scripture study. Then it was off to ride the picturesque hills of the V6, under the lead of John Varian and his fun and helpful wranglers, Matt, Clayton, Gary & Colton. We gathered the cattle and tried our hand at team penning and cutting. A line dancing class led by Erlinda Sullivan was also on the agenda. This year's recipient of the Cooper James Costa Memorial Scholarship was Dawn Diovera.
Susan Wirgler was the winner of this year's quilt raffle. The quilt was handmade and donated by Kim Austin, with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund.
Music worship, graciously led by Sue Carter, is a very important part of the retreat. We even have our own "sign" teacher, Fran Sands, who taught us how to sign the song, "In The Eye Of The Storm". A truly moving experience!
The retreat ended on Sunday, with Whitney leading our church service, on top of a hill, on horseback. Holding with tradition, we closed our service with the song "God Is On The Move". After church, attendees had the option of one last ride before heading home.
The weekend seemed to fly by. Reluctantly, friends, old and new, hugged and said good-bys. Most felt like they were ready to face the hectic holidays ahead. Surrounded by God's beautiful creation, they were able to "Ride, Relax, Refresh, Renew & Rejoice".

WHAT AN AMAZING WEEKEND God had planned for us!
First off, we had not one, but two speakers!
Thursday evening, we were blessed with a presentation by Terri Woods, a certified labor & birth doula, childbirth & lactation educator, & postpartum doula. She has been a doula since 2004 when she made her first trip to the Philippines and assisted in Mercy In Action birth centers with her sister and daughter, both Certified Professional Midwives. Sharing stories about her travels and work, Terri gave us special insight into the world of dulas. You can find out more about Terri & doula services by visiting Blessed ChildBirth & Doula Services as well as SLO Doula Connection.
Throughout the rest of the weekend, horsewoman, mom & worship leader, Lisa Walter lead us into fun, lively, & thoughtful discussions about what it means to be a soldier in God’s army. We discussed, that as Christians, we are in constant spiritual warfare & how important “wearing”( & utilizing) the Armor of God is! The “visuals” Lisa used to represent the Armor of God were creative and unforgettable!

We had several extra special treats over the weekend.
-The first…an incredible moonlight ride on Friday night! Talk about seeing God’s Glory & Majesty!

-After our ride, Lisa surprised us each with a special, handmade (by her), “jeweled” horseshoe. The “jewels” represented 12 foundation stones of the New Jerusalem mentioned in Revelation 21.
-Erlinda Sullivan again was patient & lead us in line dancing.
-Fran Sands taught us how to sign “In The Eye Of The Storm” as we sang in worship! It was awesome!
-Several of the ladies donated items (many BEAUTIFULLY homemade)for our Saturday night raffle.
-Karyn Stevens brought goodie bags for all the attendees that contained several items donated by a host of manufacturers.
-Our Worship Leader, Sue Carter surprised us with a special “Horsewomen By Grace” worship book.

All the ladies were hoping to be the winner of this year’s quilt made by Kim Austin. As usual, it was beautiful and lovingly made. The proceeds always go towards next year’s Cooper James Costa Memorial Scholarship fund. The winner…Jo Cameron!
This year’s Scholarship winner was Nancy Stetson.
The most humbling, but love felt moment, was when I was presented with a special buckle by all the wonderful participants. It still brings tears to my eyes & joy to my heart as I write this, knowing God’s Love through such incredible women!
Of course, we wrapped up our weekend with an amazing, horseback, worship-filled, mountain top church service lead by Pastor Josh. Pastor Josh reminded us, that because we live in a world filled with spiritual warfare & political correctness, we not only are we to practice what we preach, but remember to preach what we practice! AMEN!!!
2015
As in years past, God's presence & protection could be felt all around us throughout the weekend. We were incredibly blessed with beautiful weather, fun rides in the hills & lots of laughs working cattle.
Our speaker, retired US Air Force pilot, commercial pilot and author, Heather Sharp, not only kept us entertained throughout the weekend with her amazing, and often times funny, stories, but rode with us as well.
Sue Carter blessed us by leading us in music worship.
We giggled and laughed (as well as worked off some of the delicious V6 dinner) as Erlinda Sullivan taught us how to do some line dances.

We had wonderful sharing during our Bible study, and of course, Pastor Josh closed out the weekend with a rich & thought provoking church service. Take a look at the following video to get an idea of how great a weekend it was.

MORE ABOUT HEATHER
It is a miracle that Heather is alive today. She had not one, but TWO freak accidents. In the first accident, she was T-boned at highway speeds. She had a crushed pelvis and a mild traumatic brain injury. The ambulance that responded to the scene thought she was dead. Two years later, a tree fell on her head. Ironically, the same helicopter team responded and, again, they thought she was dead. They rushed her to the hospital where portions of her skull had to be removed to stop the bleeding on her brain. In addition to the severe brain injury, she also had 12 fractures in her back.
But God had plans for Heather and He is was not ready to call her home. He kept sending her back! Today, Heather relays her story with humor and candor. She strongly believes her miraculous recovery is thanks to God.
She now realizes that her life is unique. Growing up, Heather thought her life was normal. Didn’t every girl get up at 3 a.m. to help her dad (a vet) do surgery on a cow, compete in rodeos every weekend, and give riding lessons to pay for flight training? When Heather became the only female in her Air Force pilot training class, she realized that her life might be a little unconventional. She flew the C-130 for the USAF, and the Airbus 320 and the Boeing 747 worldwide for Delta Air Lines.
Heather shared what a patient suffering from a brain injury or traumatic event might be going thru. Heather didn't claim to have all the answers, but offered her perspective and insight.

Maureen Gallatin, author of "An Extra Flake" devotional, founder of Amazing Women Inspired by Horses, and Executive Director of The International Center for Equestrian Ministries (ICEM) was our speaker for our 2nd retreat. Maureen believes horses have a special mission to help us develop faith in God, confidence in ourselves, and effectiveness in working for the greater good.
By using the message of hope and providing leadership training, her desire is to help people discover and achieve their mission in sharing God’s love through horses.
Maureen definitely has, and practices, the "gift of presence". Anyone speaking with her knows she is truly "present" and they have her full attention.
Retreat attendees received lots of little "nuggets" of wisdom that will not only help them walk and grow closer to God, but also give them the ability to help others in their walk and relationship with the Lord.
With her uplifting wisdom and spiritual encouragement, Maureen spoke on topics such as --
-"Identity Theft"- how the enemy loves to steal our identity and make us feel we are less than what God created us to be.
-"Restoring the Relationship"- between ourselves, God, other people and even our horses.
-"Who you are, isn't always how you act"
-"Remove guilt, don't manage it"
-"What happens when plan "A" fails?"
-"Past labels"
And much more.
A beautiful, handmade lap quilt, inlaid with scripture, was raffled off Saturday night. The quilt was carefully and lovingly made, and graciously donated, by Kim Austin. Proceeds from the ticket sales went to the Cooper James Costa Memorial Scholarship.
We got to know each other better
We rode
We played with cattle
And we ended our special weekend with a beautiful church service on horseback.
What was so cool, was at the end of the service, an eagle flew over head!

2013
At our 2013 retreat, we were blessed to have as our guest speaker, Cowgirl Hall of Fame member and professional cutting horse trainer, Barbra Schulte. Barbra is also known for her work as a personal performance coach, author, clinician and equine consultant. On Saturday, Barbra gave two insightful and thought provoking talks. Barbra's "Mental Makeover" talk, gave us powerful, step by step mental riding strategies and suggestions to become more confident and successful not only with our horses and in competition, but in handling life's challenges. Most of the retreat participants also recognized how these strategies could also help deal with family, friends, coworkers and bosses!
In her second talk, "Peaceful After All – Walking Through Life's Traumas and Coming Out the Other Side Feeling Blessed", Barbra share with us her journey through her son Zane's battle with cancer, and life after his passing. This talk not only touched the attendees but also gave them insight on how best to help those who have lost a loved one or close friend.
Thank you so much for sharing with us Barbra and helping to make the retreat a success!

In addition to our regular activities, those who wanted to, were able to start their day with a sunrise devotional and prayer hike.
We also had a great stretch session after our long day in the saddle and learned some equine stretches for our 4-legged partners!
On Sunday, some of the attendees, who had brought their bikes, enjoyed a great bike ride to our church service location.

The V6
The V6 Ranch is a real working cattle ranch, nestled in the Cholame Valley. It envelops 20,000 acres of the most diverse and alluring country in the heart of central California.
Located an equal distance between Los Angeles and San Francisco, just a four hour drive from either city, the V6 Ranch offers the delight of bygone days in a world where fast is the average speed. This beautiful ranch will tickle the fancy of any person that seeks peace and quiet or just wants to get away from the street lights and asphalt. The V6 Ranch is a frontier once populated by a few homesteaders, but now occupied by an abundance of wildlife, wildflowers, cattle, and horses. Nature's delights can be seen from every angle. The clean air and warm nights are ideal for laying out under the stars. The clean water from the streams allows you to be refreshed naturally.
The ranch offers hiking, photography, over 200 varieties of wildflowers, wildlife, and bird watching. Pine Canyon Lake is the largest on the ranch and is a wonderful place to fish, swim, sunbathe, or row our boat out to the double decker floating dock.
